Prints and CD’s FAQ

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HIGH RESOLUTION CD AND A LOW RESOLUTION CD?

Low resolution CDs contain images that are small and perfect for internet sharing in forums such as MySpace, Facebook, and email.  They are not sold with permission to print and are watermarked with the name of our studio and website.  High resolution CD’s contain images that are too large for internet sharing, but can be printed at up to size 8×10 with no loss of quality.  Included with each High Resolution CD is a copywrite release giving you license to make unlimited prints.

DO I OWN THE COPYWRITE ON PICTURES FROM A CD?

No.  By federal law, we retain the copyright to every image we take, and copyright ownership cannot be transferred.

WHAT CAN (AND CAN’T) I DO WITH THE IMAGES I RECEIVE ON CD?

When you purchase a low resolution CD, you receive the images on a disc with permission to share the images in personal internet use ONLY.  These images can be posted to personal facebook pages, family websites, or shared via email and cannot be printed.  When you purchase a High Resolution CD, you receive the images on disk, plus a written copyright release that gives you permission to make prints or other photo products. The release is specific only to the person or persons purchasing the CD, and cannot be duplicated for others’ use.  Copies of the images cannot be sold to friends and family, or distributed to magazines or websites or any other third party. Significant changes to any images on either a High Resolution CD or a Low Resolution CD cannot be made.  Resizing and cropping are okay, but editing or enhancing in photoshop or any other editing program is not permissible.  Lastly, copyright releases can not be transferred. In other words, you can’t e-mail the photos to your friends and family and tell them they are free to print the images. Only the owner of the copywrite release has permission to print the images.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PRINTS ORDERED THROUGH THE WEBSITE AND PICTURES PRINTED FROM A CD?

The process that each image goes through before printing is very skilled work and can take hours to complete. This is why our prints are more expensive than those you can get at Wal-Mart or any other one-hour photo place.  Discount chains make their money on volume, not on customized 1:1 service.  At the one-hour photo place, images are printed on low-quality paper and run through generic tweaking (which usually makes time image WORSE, not better).  Images purchased directly from the photographer, however, are printed on the highest quality paper available and each picture is hand edited to remove blemishes, soften skin tones, enhance colors, etc. This requires specialized equipment and a great deal of time (usually 30-45 minutes per picture.)  The quality of our prints simply cannot be matched by one-hour printing companies.

DO YOU RETOUCH ALL OF YOUR PRINTS?

For typical portrait photography (including family, couples, engagement, newborns, children and seniors), we retouch every photo that is shown as a proof on our website.  In the case of weddings or portrait sessions where more than 30 images will be ordered, we will retouch* 30 portraits of your choice, free of charge, and additional prints for $10 per picture, per edit, on up to 50 additional photos. As an additional courtesy, we will include a copy of any edited photos you order as prints in a low-resolution CD for internet sharing as part of your portrait package.

*Retouching is done at the photographers discretion and can include color effects, blemish removal, teeth whitening, and other enhancements.  Unless otherwise stated, proofs shown on our website are the final, fully retouched images.  If additional retouching or conversions to black and white, sepia, etc. on any image is requested, charges will apply.
