Pot O’ Bread

It’s been a while since I’ve messed anything up in the kitchen, so I guess I had this one coming…

This morning, Jon started some bread for me and tripled the recipe to make six loaves (presumably so that we wouldn’t have to worry about bread for a while.  heh heh.)  Later this afternoon, I added the rest of the ingredients and kneaded the bread, but while kneading, it became apparent that I must have added too much or too little of something, because it wasn’t forming into loaves properly.  It was still salvageable, though, and my kids aren’t picky eaters, so I threw it in our big pot and put it in the oven to rise.  I’ll usually set the oven temperature to warm for a few minutes after putting the bread in, but I often have a tough time remembering to turn it back off.  This time, though, I had a plan.  

I set the oven to 400 degrees, figuring that if I knew the bread would be ruined if I didn’t turn the oven off, it would somehow work like a ribbon tied around some remote corner of my mind, reminding me to turn off the oven after a few minutes.  (Has anyone guessed the utterly predictable ending of this story yet?)  Somehow, in the 180 seconds or so that the oven needed to warm up, I managed to get completely distracted and 20 minutes later, working steadily on pictures in photoshop, I started smelling the wonderful aroma of baking bread.

Six loaves of bread, with an over or under abundance of some essential ingredient, all lumped together in one gigantic tubular loaf.  This ought to be interesting.

I’m not yet hopeless, though.  If there is anything that characterizes me besides inattentiveness and impulsiveness, it’s innovativeness.  I’ve set the oven temperature to 200, to see if I can possibly bake the inside without burning the outside.  Who knows, maybe a bit of string will help me to form this into a beautiful loaf.  If not, I’m sure we can make a great variation of the kid’s favorite soup with it.

    Last spring, when I was making my first batch of bread after the Week of Unleavened bread, I put the bread in the oven to bake (forgetting to set my timer because I was sure to remember, lol) and promptly went outside to read to my kids…. about an hour and a half later, it suddenly dawned on me that I was cooking bread before deciding to read to the kids… oy! The bread was rather brick-like, but we did manage to eat most of it. And yes, I had done the whole, “warm” up the oven for a rise / partially cook it thing too!
