I recently told a friend that I struggle with fear concerning our vehicles. Later during a session, Jon told our counselor about his fear that our van was on its last leg. Our counselor gave us some wonderful advice that I intend to share one of these days, but suffice it to say for now that we came home from that session and gave our van over to God, with the intention of thanking God for His provision for a new one every time we were tempted to worry about this one.
You know where this is going, right?
When I took the kids to music lessons this week, the van started to overheat. Interestingly enough, we broke down about a block from a mechanic and were able to keep coolant in it just long enough to make it there. The cost to fix it was just $25, and we received something much more valuable…
The prevention of a major accident…
As the mechanic looked over our van, he discovered a problem with the ball joints. These are the things that actually hold the wheel of the vehicle to the vehicle itself. He essentially told us that they are so bad, he recommends we not drive it AT ALL until we get it fixed (his words: “you’ll be okay to drive home, but this needs to be fixed immediately.”) After talking with a friend about it, he told me that if the ball bearings went out a wreck would be inevitable (HIS exact words were “I’d rather have three tires go out at the same time than have a ball joint go out.”) If our van hadn’t overheated today, we would have had NO IDEA WHATSOEVER. We travel very twisty roads to get home, with teeny tiny barriers between us and huge drops (in one case, a drop right off a bridge.) Those barriers are extremely small and I’ve often thought that there is very little chance that they could stop our van if we were to spin out of control, and here we were with no idea that we’ve been driving a ticking time bomb. Thank GOD our van overheated today!!!
This is not the first time God has intervened on our behalf like this. Once, the breaks on our van simply STOPPED WORKING, right as Jon was pulling out of a gas station which “just so happened” to be right in front of an auto mechanic shop.
We don’t have the money to fix our van (yet! Praying hard about that!) but we’ll be offering a special mini session package again soon to help raise money, either to fix it or to get a new van (this one really is falling apart, and we don’t know that the cost to fix it would be worth it, in the long run.)
More on that tomorrow, but for now I just wanted to take a moment to say…
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
